Dating back as far as 1852 a description of a coat of arms existed:

"Een Wapen voor dit land is aangenomen, aldus zamengesteld: Op een zilveren veld zal een Wagen en een Gouden Anker staan, en op dat Wapen een Arend rusten. Op de regterzijde van dat Wapen een Man in’s lands kleederdragt, gewapend met een Geweer en toebehooren. Aan de linkerzijde een Leeuw."

Significantly the motto was: "EENDRAGT MAAKT MAGT"

I shall translate:

"A coat of Arms for this land has been adopted, composed like this:

On a silver field there shall be a wagon and a golden anchor, and resting upon these arms shall be an eagle. On the right side of the arms a man in local costume armed with a rifle with appurtenances. On the left side a lion.)

Motto translated: "Unity is Strength"

Move along a few centuries through times very well summarized and alluded to already in comments on this site and out there for those that really care and have time for finding the truths within history and that don’t get swept up in media or other sensationalism ... Across a timeline in my opinion that holds a great deal of history that has been often (of recent as well as during past brainwashing attempts) been incorrectly documented and misconstrued leading to many misconceptions along the line... But which I strongly believe will be represented truthfully in times ahead mostly because I hope and believe there are many out there from SA (whether they want to be known as Afrikaners or Boere or even Dutch Colonists, or Swazi, or Zulu, or Xhosa, or Malay, or pink or brown, or green) that are without hatred in their hearts and are not still stuck in the past and are able to work on a united future in this present thus allowing them the ability to write and speak factually and even emotionally if need be (yet not emotionally influenced enough to get the facts wrong)

People that will for example be aware of things such as the various elements of good nature and tolerance that did in fact exist (as an example for us today in SA) as far back as the days during and after the 1835 Groot Trek (even amidst animosity) between settlers, Zulu, Swazi, Xhosa all vying for their piece of land within a greater land now called South Africa. People that will know of men like J.J. (Joachim) Fereira , F.J. Maritz, and Swazi king Umbandin of 1876 that lead to Klein Vrijstaat, and that know that things only went wrong after the British started stirring the pot and got involved in their Imperialistic ways of the time (Not blaming the Khakis even for the resultant wrongs and atrocities that did occur during and after they had been kicked off the land eventually with their tails between their legs – it’s in the past – Let bygones be bygones).

What I'm taking a longwinded and roundabout way to get to is the fact that different cultures had once actually known how (or shown a great deal of ability) to get along (IN South Africa). That tolerance is something South Africans (whether your “pink brown chocolate or yellow") have ingrained within them and is have in their make-up as part of their history if they’re truthful with themselves and not swept up by greed and anger. That knows that responsibility to garner tolerance of each other is the responsibility of each and every individual... Who know blame and anger is not to be directed from white to black or black to white or whatever colour you want to use in the comparison to reach any form of peace or tolerance.

Current SA is showing growing amounts of intolerance... Growing amount of hatred and racism... And that is ALL that is wrong! And that is what needs to be fixed (by all). And it is something which is everyone’s responsibility regardless of colour.

For all the good that Mandela has done (whatever weaknesses he may have had at times in his past) to unite a NEW nation (combined of all cultures and colours as it is), it will all be for nothing and get washed down the drain if we don't realise the underlying wisdom conveyed within the words of said coat of arms:

“EENDRAGT MAAKT MAGT" ("Unity is Strength").

It might have referred back then to a specific culture and group of people that I am proud to say I am descendant of, but it is now more true than ever in the country that I am JUST as proud to be a associated with... However the group of people to which it pertains is no longer the same group. It is now ALL of SA (Regardless of culture or colour)

Summed up:

"Concentrate on our differences and those differences will divide us. Concentrate on our similarities and we will be united as a nation."

Actually Spluton Hogg and the rest of your ilk, "Mshini wami" means "my machine" and not "my machine gun". The word "gun" is implied.

The song was created and was usually sung during some hard physical labour, not as some folk song to reflect over. Hence the difference in style. If you want to listen to songs created as social comment and for black social or political consciousness- try the likes of Hugh Masekela, Letta Mbulu,Caiphus Semenya and Miriam Makeba. If you have the balls to.

Perhaps before you deign to make your snide comments, you should first walk a mile in the shoes of those "unwashed masses" that you so obviously despise; spend a few years in the informal settlements so many have ended up in because of bloodyminded injustice perpetrated by people like you.

Unlike so many of the "unwashed masses", when were you ever prepared to give up your life for something you believe in?

I love your blog! Great to see you still have a sense of humour at this point (though your more recent posts tell me you're pregnant - yay! congrats, and I hope they are twins)

I was also curious about something you said. You mentioned, "You're infertility is of the type "spike your blood sugar and you're screwed, lady" variety-"

I've been trying for two years and have never come across this. Is this a genuine 'condition'? If so, how did you find out about it? I'm intrigued - I'm a complete sugar junkie and it never crossed my mind that this may have an impact on getting pregnant. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and best wishes,

Jane

Adi,

It's wonderful that you have so many cherished memories of your dad. The pain will, I'm sure, fade - sort of like a photo that fades with time, but is still always there. My mom died when she was only 1 year older than I am now ..and I still run various memories through my mind at least weekly, if not daily ..even after 25 years. But we carry on and serve, I hope, as a tribute the good things we gleaned from our time with those passed.

I have the utmost confidence that you were an absolute blessing as a daughter. You were the best daughter you could be - and the memories you describe leave me knowing that your dad must have looked at you with immense pride and joy.

Thanks for sharing your heart so openly.

Peace

- Joe
